Soot washing is the technical term for treating newer brickwork and pointing to match their surroundings. The piebald look is all too common - cheap re-pointing and other repairs are generally to blame. These pictures show the results of soot washing a Georgian property.
We generally don’t recommend cleaning as it can cause severe damage to old London brick. The visual improvement of soot washing is dramatic and shows what can be done with a little thought and care, and as an alternative to the potentially damaging effects of cleaning.
