Despite their individuality, there are some common cures for the restrictions these wonderful older buildings present us with.
Rear extensions are the ubiquitous addition to the London townhouse, allowing the kitchen to become the heart of the home, with room for the family to come together, and wide glazed doors onto the garden providing an indoors / outdoors living space. Even the extended building will frequently feature a partially or all-glazed roof.
Master bedrooms have become master suites, converting other bedrooms to provide walk in wardrobes and luxurious private bathrooms. Loft conversions can often give back bedroom space lost to creating en-suite bathrooms elsewhere.
The growing trend of the basement conversion has given the townhouse an entirely new lease of life. Unlike the loft conversion, making space under the ground floor doubles the available living space and creates new opportunities for 21st century living, such as media rooms, games rooms, guest suites, gyms, pools, wine cellars or anything else you can think of!

Recent advances in this area have allowed these systems to become controllable over a single technology platform throughout the house, reducing the requirement for complex wiring and racks of equipment for the majority of automation systems.
