Monsoon Owner Moves Ahead With Mega Basement
Peter Simon, the owner of the Monsoon and Accessorize chains, has been given permission to pursue a large-scale basement conversion in his London home.
Kensington and Chelsea council approved the mega-basement project, which will include a wine cellar, underground swimming pool, gym and two apartments, according to the Daily Mail.
Mr Simon is also planning to knock down five houses into a single property, building a vast palatial home for his family. The final house was purchased last year for £2.5 million, with renovation work for combining the dwellings expected to exceed £1 million.
The project will involve various extensions and the construction of two basements beneath the homes. In addition to the luxury swimming pool, Mr Simon has made designs for a sauna, massage room, Jacuzzi and billiards room. It is speculated that the two self-contained flats will be for staff.
“He has lived there for more than 20 years and now wants to renovate it and turn it into a family home,” a friend of Mr Simon said. The first two properties were purchased in 1997, while the third and fourth homes were bought in 2002 and 2012 respectively.
The Daily Mail stated that purchasing the properties may have been a shrewd investment, as terrace houses for sale in the area are on the market for between £5 million and £14 million.
